that are shaping the next

We are standing on the verge of exceeding the human brain’s capacity to comprehend the options and opportunities of our future.

Your best way of understanding and making sense of the world around you, inductive logic, is how you draw conclusions based on qualitative information. We apply critical thinking to our observations and the data around us to arrive at our best understanding of the situation. The problem with inductive logic is that our conclusions can only be as sound as our ability to mindfully observe the limited information available in our immediate environment, and our capacity to think critically and draw insights from what we see. Machines don’t use inductive logic.

By inductive reasoning, all swans were once believed to be white. As our field of information grew (with black swans discovered in Australia), our understanding changed. Black Swan Theory refers to “unexpected events of large magnitude and consequence and their dominant role in history.” Our collective field of information is about to grow, exponentially. Right now, humanity is pioneering uncharted technological territory teeming with Black Swans.

These ten KEYS OF THE WORLD TO COME will help you better recognize and understand the factors shaping our future. They are revolutionizing new ways of power and new forms of communicating, consuming, educating, governing, mobility, and more. Learn what’s coming, what it looks like, what it can actually do, and how it might show up sooner than you think in your world.

Artificial Intelligence
& Robotics

With the accelerating speed of computing, and machine learning through adaptive algorithms, Artificial Intelligence uses cognitive computing to create the prerequisites so that the machines no longer need to be programmed, and simply require targets. It is the objective that is programmed. The machine learns at high speed through algorithms, sensors and iteration gaining artificial intelligence.

An advantage of AI is that once a mistake is encountered, it will not occur twice. The error is adapted and the learning is transmitted to connected machines incorporating this new situation into its layers of understanding.

By machine, we could mean a computer, or a device – like a car, or a drone. Or robotics. The field of robotics uses functional machines (robots) that can substitute for and replicate human actions. Robots are currently active for applications like surgeries and prosthetics, and are also being developed at a microscopic scope to function at a cellular level.

Cognitive Computing

If you hear the expression “data is the new gold,” this is why. You know when someone can bring your coffee exactly how you like it? It’s a bit like that.

Cognitive computing enables adaptive, interactive, contextual human-to-machine interactions, without the confines of programmed responses.

IBM’s Watson demonstrates cognitive computing. If you can imagine Alexa or Siri engaging with you, contextually, in a unique way that is tailored to your exact preferences, as gleaned from your every digital interaction (including information previously indiscernible, now garnered by a machine-learned understanding of the patterns, relationships and contextual associations of your digital interactions), you are starting to understand. You may experience early cognitive computing today through voice user interfaces, or with speech recognition & translation into text on your phone. Imagine an autocorrect that validates your intention?

Generative design, which imitates the evolutionary approach of nature is a great example of cognitive computing. Designers or technicians import design goals and parameters such as materials, production methods and cost limitations into generative design software. The software examines all possible permutations of a solution, and quickly generates design. It tests and learns from every iteration about what works and what does not.

Internet of Everything

The cloud enabled us to use a network of remote servers hosted on the internet instead of a local server or personal computer providing a new level of connectivity, freedom and access.

The Internet of Things (IoT) emphasizes machine-to-machine communication embedding the detection, processing and communication capabilities of a computer into every item in a supply chain. The Internet of Everything (IoE) broadens that horizon to incorporate people, processes, data and things. “Connectivity” as we know it is about to be redefined. Today, everything that surrounds us or that we carry, is dormant. It has no life, or “intelligence” from a digital point of view: clothes, bags, furniture, even cars. Since 2020, there have been 50,000 million “things” carrying 1 billion sensors. By 2030, 500,000 million. Exponential Growth.

Envision 500,000 million things using cognitive computing at breakneck speed to gain artificial intelligence via machine learning among and between people, processes, data and things. Radical connectivity. The Internet of Everything.

More and more people are talking about exponential technologies and how business models are changing. Agile methodologies are already a must, but the idea of only introducing scrum or kanban has nothing to do with it just as digital transformation is not only about introducing technology. No doubt, ActioGlobal, you ARE a REAL team, with capital letters. Thank you so much for teaching us!

3D Printing

Initially valued for rapid prototyping in manufacturing, 3D printing now reaches across industries and sectors finding applications and sparking innovation in education, medicine, museums, fashion and even food. The impact of 3D printing supports a system of production based on actual demand, reducing supply chains and globalization as production is localized, further enabling ‘pay as you go’ consumption models.

What if your local mall wasn’t a building filled with inventory, but a location that you digitally access to custom order exactly what you want, as you want it, personalized with options tailored to and ‘connected with’ your preferences?

What if you designed and ordered something, it was made, and dropped on your doorstep later that day? 3d printing affects cost, lead time, overhead, and enhances quality with the ability to nimbly iterate through prototypes. With this shift in production comes a need for companies to evaluate their growth strategies, rebuilding around digital technologies with the right people to support ideation, deployment and expansion. How will this affect the profile of the people you will want on your team?

Autonomous & Aerial Transportation

Drones are 143 times cheaper than they were in 2010. While drones continue to top Christmas Gift Guides year over year, there’s something bigger going on. In 2017 alone, Boeing filed 261 patents on drones. Amazon Prime Air is a conceptual drone-based delivery system currently in development.

To get your Amazon order in a drone is just a matter of time. And this is time-boxed in the next decade.

Through the exploration and development of viable Passenger Drones (Air Taxis!), organizations like Intel, NASA, Uber and Airbus are actively overcoming challenges from a mechanical, engineering, safety and regulatory perspective to bring this service to market potentially in Dubai as soon as possible.

Blockchain

Initially valued for rapid prototyping in manufacturing, 3D printing now reaches across industries and sectors finding applications and sparking innovation in education, medicine, museums, fashion and even food. The impact of 3D printing supports a system of production based on actual demand, reducing supply chains and globalization as production is localized, further enabling ‘pay as you go’ consumption models.

Blockchain Technology offers the capacity to enable widespread, transformational change by cheaply verifying the attributes of a transaction, lowering the cost of verification.

It’s resistance to modification of the data presents a new level of fidelity and transparency that can offer a lower-cost way to securely share information between public and private networks.
I can honestly disclose, due to 20 years of leadership in digital companies, that I haven't ever been so effective like in these days while I am using the PEAK framework and the support of ActioGlobal.

Extended Reality (XR)

The virtuality continuum ranges from experiences that are completely real to experiences that are entirely virtual. The area in between is called mixed reality, where Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Augmented Virtuality (AV) exist.

Extended reality refers to all environments where elements of virtual and real experience are combined, and human-machine interactions generated by technology (computers or wearables).

VR is most commonly practiced by gamers: a fabricated scenario in a simulated environment. AR levels-up to provide an experience overlaid with sensory input in an enhanced but real-world environment. Potential for extended reality use exists for knowledge sharing, educating, managing information flow and collaboration with remote teammates.

Digital Biology and Neuroscience

In February 2018, scientists at Arizona State University successfully programmed nanorobots to reduce tumors by shutting down their blood supply. The groundbreaking devices described in the journal Nature could one day lead to armies of surgeon robots that can clean human arteries or build computer components. In one of the projects, a team from New York’s Columbia University created a spiderbot four nanometers wide. This is about 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. It is reasonable to induce that ‘robots,’ made from DNA and proteins could be used in operations to correct gene disorders.

Billions of nanobots could travel through the bloodstream in our body and our brains, destroying pathogens, correcting DNA errors, eliminating toxins and performing many other tasks to improve our physical well-being.

Quantum Computing

Basic computation is binary: Calculation, 0/1, Calculation, 0/1… Quantum computing breaks with this limitation. Binary digital computers are based on transistors, and manipulate individual bits of data. Millions of bits work together to process and display information.

The basic idea is that quantum computers simultaneously execute (ie in a single operation), while digital computers have to move along and look at each solution in sequence.

Quantum computing is an emerging technology that allows simultaneous calculations, and the iteration and parallel of several alternatives. Google’s and IBM’s quantum computing projects calculate algorithms at a rate of thousand times the speed of a traditional computer chip. That could make a huge difference in the processing power that is available to us in the future.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology has to do with engineering functional systems on an atomic scale. Everyday applications of nanotechnology today lead to quality improvements like expanding the capabilities of electronic devices while reducing their weight and power usage, or in skin care products that use nanoparticles to deliver vitamins deep into the skin.

In the future, coatings developed using nanotechnology will have the potential to allow materials to “heal” when damaged or worn.

Governments worldwide have invested billions in nanotechnology research, banking on its industrial and military applications, like the sensors enabling connectivity through the Internet of Everything, or the ability to harvest energy from the surrounding environment.
Shaping the Next

It is estimated that right now there are almost 4 billion people connected, twice as many as two years ago and approximately half that are estimated for 2030, where it is projected that 90% of the population of 8.500 million inhabitants will be connected What are we able to create with 3.500 million connected minds?

What we do not know is by far much more relevant than what we know.

If we look back 10 years before any of this existed in our lives, we will realize that right now, at this moment, what we do not know is far more relevant than what we think we know. Embrace uncertainty, make today obsolete and shape the next.
